October Full (SUPER) Moon Nature Night Hike

Oct 16, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Join us just before the Full Moon (when the post sunset viewing is best), to explore all things that comes alive in the night.

This hike is adapted for Los Angeles from a night program I used to teach kids in Yosemite National Park! Think of it like the sleep away summer camp program you wish you’d been able to do as a kid.

NEW for summer 2024:

  • A bat detector to hear the ultrasonic sounds the make for echolocation!
  • A telescope to get a close up view (and phone pic) of the full moon!

We’ll explore our local environment as the landscape shifts from day to sunset to night, learning about the ways in which both flora and fauna shift along with it. Learn about bats, night blooming flowers, owls, and other nocturnal creatures through engaging activities. Hiking through some of Griffith Park’s primary bat and owl habitat, we’ll also explore the ways in which our own eyes adjust (or don’t) to darkness with a couple of fun games.

We will avoid using headlamps or any other light source as much as possible, but the nearly full moon will rise early enough to provide us with ample light to show us the way on this wide and mostly flat Griffith Park trail.
