Thai Comfort Food
Holy Basil, located in Atwater Village, is a well-known Thai restaurant that has garnered consistent love for its trendy atmosphere and balanced flavors. This location, which opened as the second branch after Downtown LA, continues to embody its unique charm.

As we walked down the narrow alley, Holy Basil came into view. Even though we arrived just five minutes before opening, there were already a few people in line. The restaurant is relatively small with limited seating, so be prepared for a wait when it gets busy. After being shown to our seats, we quickly scanned the menu, as we were quite hungry, and ordered the Nam Tok Beef Tataki, Wild Shrimp Curry, Grandma’s Fish and Rice, Fresh Scallops, and Grapefruit Basil. Each dish promised a different charm, heightening our anticipation.

The first dish to arrive, Fresh Scallops, was an appetizer that elevated the flavor with Holy Sauce, garlic oil, and fried shallots atop fresh scallops. The savory and salty taste was followed by a subtle spiciness, making it a simple yet memorable dish. The Nam Tok Beef Tataki featured thinly sliced Angus beef paired with a refreshing sauce of cilantro and lime. Before tasting, the strong aroma of fish sauce was apparent, and the plating had a bold visual appeal. However, upon taking a bite, the harmony between the zesty sauce and the meat was surprisingly well-balanced. As I became accustomed to the aroma, the umami flavor emerged, making it a dish I would definitely want to try again on my next visit.
Grandma’s Fish and Rice, as described, carried a nostalgic feeling reminiscent of the chef’s childhood memories. Crispy fried white fish was shredded and placed atop fluffy jasmine rice, complemented by cilantro, shallots, and chili flakes, delivering a fragrant and notably spicy flavor. The delicate taste and crispy texture combined, with intermittent bursts of heat, made it a surprisingly stimulating dish to enjoy. The Wild Shrimp Curry offered a rich curry flavor enhanced by a deep coconut aroma, resulting in a smooth and hearty taste. The plump shrimp added satisfying texture, and the well-balanced flavor had a slight kick that was impressive. The curry’s consistency was just right to pair with rice, making it a non-spicy yet addictive dish that kept me reaching for more.
