Westward Beach to Paradise Cove
Point Dume is a natural reserve located in Malibu, where coastal cliffs and sandy beaches come together, offering an open sea view at the northwestern tip of Santa Monica Bay. The course I visited starts at Westward Beach, passes through Paradise Cove, and continues to Point Dume Nature Preserve, making it a 5.4-mile round trip along the Southern California coastline. Overall, the trail is relatively gentle, making it easy to walk, and the proximity to the ocean adds a significant charm to the scenery.
The trail began at Westward Beach in Malibu. The elevation gain is about 521ft, which is not significant, making the difficulty level easy; however, the long stretches of walking on sand can surprisingly put strain on the legs. For reference, the parking fee was $8 for the day, and parking is conveniently available right in front of the beach. At first, you walk along the wide sandy beach while listening to the gentle sound of the waves, and the horizon where the sea meets the sky fills your view, naturally easing any feelings of stress. It feels more like a long walk along the open beach rather than a hike through complicated mountain paths.
As I passed Paradise Cove, the coastal cliffs and rocky terrain began to reveal themselves. The atmosphere is different from the sandy beach, with the sight of waves crashing against the rocks and the trail leading up the cliffs being quite impressive. The path itself is relatively straightforward, but the constantly changing colors and light of the sea keep it from becoming boring. Moreover, thanks to the clear weather following a few days of rain, the water’s hue shone even more vividly, and the surrounding area was filled with yellow wildflowers, creating a vibrant landscape that contrasted beautifully with the blue of the sea. Each moment spent walking along the cliffs was filled with vivid colors, making me want to pause and take in each scene.
As you get closer to Point Dume Nature Preserve, there are lookout points on the cliffs. The view of the coastline stretching below and the wide Santa Monica Bay is the highlight of this course. Although the wind was quite strong, it made the air feel clear, and the sound of the waves was more distinct. When I paused for a moment to take in the scenery, I was struck by the fact that such a view can be encountered without having to travel far.
Point Dume
This course is great for running, light workouts, or leisurely beach walks. The path continues without significant uphill sections, making it less strenuous, and the biggest advantage is that you can walk while constantly facing the ocean. It’s a coastal route that you can easily embark on without complicated gear or preparation, making it a recommended spot when you want to fully experience the unique scenery of California.
