Big Pine Lakes Day Hike
Big Pine Lakes is a high mountain lake located in the eastern Sierra Nevada mountains of California, where the clear turquoise lakes and the majestic Temple Crag create a stunning scene. It consists of a total of seven main lakes, each offering a unique landscape that can be explored through hiking or backpacking. In particular, the view of Temple Crag from Lake 2 is often cited as the iconic scene of this area. The best time to visit is from summer to early autumn, and the view you encounter after a challenging ascent is a reward in itself.

This hike started at the Big Pine Creek Trailhead. The day before, we stayed in Bishop, and it was about a 30-minute drive to the trailhead, making it convenient to get an early start. In fact, we arrived around 5:40 AM, and since it was Labor Day weekend, the parking lot was nearly full, with only two spots left. Although I had heard a lot about this popular trail, I was a bit surprised to see it so crowded so early in the morning.

At the beginning of the trail, it was still dark, so the scenery was not very visible, but hearing the sound of water flowing down the valley eased my tension a bit. In the meantime, the sun quickly rose, allowing light to seep through the trees, and as my view gradually opened up, I felt like the real hiking had begun with the refreshing morning air. After the sun rose, the real ascent began. At first, the trail was lined with dense forest, providing shade that made walking easier, but as the altitude increased, I began to feel breathless and my legs became heavy. Still, the valley water flowed alongside the trail, and occasional cool breezes helped me forget the difficult steps for a moment. As the trees became sparser, a vast landscape of towering mountains unfolded before me, and the scenery revealed under the blue sky heightened my anticipation for the lakes I would encounter ahead.

While walking, we took breaks in the shade to drink water and replenish our energy with snacks. As we took these short breaks and continued our ascent, we passed the Wilderness Ranger Camp, and from that point on, the trail became steeper. It was a challenging section, but every moment we paused to cool off was met with a refreshing breeze that allowed us to continue our journey. After about an hour and a half of walking from the Trailhead, the first lake finally came into view.
First Lake
As we passed the last uphill stretch along the forest path, our view opened up to reveal the first lake. Honestly, before the hike, when I saw photos, I thought, ‘It probably won’t be that vivid in reality,’ but the color of the water before me was beyond my imagination. The deep, clear turquoise shimmered brightly in the sunlight, and the water was so calm and transparent that I could clearly see the fish swimming beneath the surface. The impressive scenery made me forget all the sweat and struggles in an instant. Overwhelmed by the feeling of finally facing the beginning of Big Pine Lakes, we paused for a moment and sat by the water’s edge, taking in the view for a long time.

Sitting by the lakeshore, we took a moment to refresh ourselves with the cool air. We had a light snack and drank some water to regain our strength, spending time capturing the scenery in photos and videos. This leisurely time in front of the tranquil lake felt like another joy of hiking. After enjoying a brief rest, we shouldered our backpacks again and set off towards the second lake.
Second Lake
After passing the first lake and continuing along the trail a bit further, we arrived at the second lake. This one was larger, and most notably, Temple Crag loomed majestically behind it, making the scenery even more impressive. The combination of the calm lake and the massive rock mountain truly represented the essence of this place. Standing by the water’s edge for a moment, I felt that all the tough moments of the journey so far were being rewarded.

We settled by the water and after dropping our backpacks, we lingered for a while longer. Sitting in front of the lake, I couldn’t take my eyes off it for a long time; the colors were so vivid that it was hard to believe, and the scenery before me felt like a different world. In particular, Temple Crag, with its massive rock face majestically covering the back of the lake, completely overwhelmed the atmosphere of this place. The scene created by the tranquil lake and the grand mountain was so breathtaking that it could never be captured in a photograph. In that moment, I forgot all the struggles of the long journey and the hardships of the steep ascent.

We turned back after visiting the second lake. Originally, we had planned to go to the third lake, but taking our time to take photos and videos made it take longer than expected. Considering the return journey, it seemed like we would be late, so we decided to save it for next time. It took about 6 hours to go up, but coming back down was quicker due to the downhill, allowing us to reach the trailhead in about 3 hours and 20 minutes. As we wrapped up this journey of just over 9 hours, I felt a desire to return someday to meet the remaining lakes.

It was a long hike, but it was a journey where I could fully appreciate the beauty of the Sierra Nevada landscape and the tranquility of the lakes. The vivid turquoise lake and the majestic Temple Crag left a much stronger impression than any photograph, and the moments I encountered while walking slowly will remain in my memory for a long time. This time, I only visited the second lake, but next time I want to start earlier and definitely see the other lakes as well. Although it’s a bit far and challenging, it’s a place where you can encounter a completely different world, so go hiking to Big Pine Lakes.
