East Garden

Traditional Cantonese Cuisine

East Garden, located in LA Chinatown, is a Chinese restaurant that offers a casual atmosphere, making it a great place for families to dine comfortably. The spacious interior and ample space between tables allow for a relaxed experience even when visiting with a larger group, and the overall lively yet comfortable ambiance was impressive.

On this day, we ordered a variety of dishes including Pork & Preserved Egg Porridge, French Style Beef Cube, Sweet and Sour Pork with Pineapple, H.K Style Fried Garlic Shrimp, Seafood Chow Mein, and House Special Lobster. As the menu suggests, it was a place where you could enjoy a wide range of classic Chinese dishes.

In particular, the Pork & Preserved Egg Porridge, which was commonly ordered at each table, felt like the signature dish of the place. The porridge, cooked smoothly, had a silky and clean texture, and the unique flavor of the preserved egg blended well without being overwhelming, making it enjoyable even for first-timers. It was a comforting dish that paired well as a starter or in between meals. The French Style Beef Cube featured tender beef cut into bite-sized pieces, lightly crispy on the outside while remaining moist inside, creating a delightful contrast in texture. The seasoning was not overpowering, allowing the natural flavor of the meat to shine, making it a dish that naturally drew attention at the table.

Sweet and Sour Pork with Pineapple showcased a familiar yet satisfying taste, with the sweet and tangy sauce complementing the crispy fried pork perfectly. The addition of pineapple added a refreshing touch, making the overall impression feel lighter, and the generous amounts of bell pepper and onion provided a good balance of texture and flavor. H.K Style Fried Garlic Shrimp had an impressive texture, with the shrimp being crispy on the outside and succulent on the inside. The strong garlic aroma was prominent, and the umami flavor was immediately noticeable with the first bite, making it a dish that kept drawing you back for more thanks to its moderate seasoning.

The Seafood Chow Mein, ordered as a noodle dish, featured a generous amount of seafood on top of crispy fried noodles, and the process of the noodles gradually softening as they absorbed the sauce was quite striking. The transition from crispiness to moistness was enjoyable, and the flavors of the seafood and seasoning blended naturally with the noodles, maintaining a good balance of taste until the end. It was a dish that was easy to enjoy without being greasy. The House Special Lobster served as a great main dish to place in the center of the table, with its deep umami flavor providing enough satisfaction for sharing among several people. The lobster was prepared for easy eating, allowing for a hassle-free experience, and the rich sauce paired well with rice or noodles.
