Ferndell to the West Observatory Loop Trail
The Ferndell to the West Observatory Loop Trail is a representative hiking course in Griffith Park where you can experience both urban and natural atmospheres. Starting with lush trees and shaded paths, the trail impressively transitions into dry mountain paths and open views. The route we walked began at Ferndell and followed the West Observatory Loop Trail to Griffith Observatory, making it a popular choice for many as it offers a view of both the LA downtown skyline and the Hollywood Sign at once. Overall, there is a steady uphill climb, but the difficulty is not very high, making it enjoyable to walk slowly while taking in the scenery.
The starting point of the trail, Ferndell, feels quite unique even within Griffith Park. With a small stream and dense trees, the calm atmosphere makes you forget that you are in the middle of the city for a moment. Sunlight filters through the leaves, and the gentle sound of flowing water creates a feeling of entering nature right from the start. The initial section is relatively gentle, making it a good place to gradually warm up, and as you walk, the forest atmosphere naturally transitions into the dry mountain scenery characteristic of LA.
As you begin to ascend towards Griffith Observatory, the view gradually opens up, revealing the wide ridges typical of Griffith Park. The trail consists of dirt paths and gravel paths, and the cityscape of LA visible below ensures there’s never a dull moment. At certain points, the Hollywood Sign comes into view quite closely, and despite being a familiar landmark, it feels even more symbolic when seen up close. On clear days, you can see all the way to Downtown LA, and the changing colors of the city throughout the day naturally draw your gaze.
As you get closer to the West Observatory Loop section, the white building of Griffith Observatory becomes increasingly visible. The view of the Observatory from the mountain path has a different atmosphere compared to looking up from below, and it is quite impressive to see it naturally nestled in the midst of LA’s landscape. Upon reaching the vicinity of the Observatory, there are expansive viewpoints, and many people take a moment to sit on benches and overlook the city. Watching the bustling city from a distance gives the impression that even though it’s the same LA, it flows at a completely different pace.
Griffith Observatory
This course is relatively accessible and is a good route for beginners to hiking. With a moderate uphill, urban views, and the iconic scenery leading to Griffith Observatory, it strikes a nice balance between tourism and exercise. It’s a great choice when you want to experience nature briefly or when you want to intuitively experience the quintessential LA landscape.
