Afuri

Fine Ramen Direct from Tokyo

The broth of Afuri ramen, which combines natural umami and flavor derived from high-quality ingredients, and achieves a balance of deep and rich taste, continues to be loved by many. In the vibrant open kitchen under warm lighting, ramen was constantly being prepared, and guests were comfortably enjoying their meals at their tables.

This visit, I wanted to try a different combination from last time, so I ordered a variety of ramen, sides, and drinks that I hadn’t tasted yet. I chose Yuzu Shio and Tonkotsu Tantan for the ramen, Tsukune and Spicy Tori Karaage for the sides, and Yuzu Limeade and Housemade Ginger Ale for the drinks.

The Yuzu Shio had a clear chicken broth with a subtle yuzu aroma that was refreshing from the first bite. The thin noodles blended well with the broth, leaving a clean yet deep umami flavor, while the tender chashu and soft-boiled egg smoothly tied the overall balance together. The salty umami and refreshing yuzu harmonized, creating a refined sensation with each bite. The Tonkotsu Tantan featured a rich tonkotsu broth enhanced with spicy miso, delivering a deep and rich flavor. The combination of savory pork and fragrant chili oil within the thick broth was impressive, and the thick noodles absorbed the seasoning well, providing a strong flavor with every bite. Chives, bok choy, and shiitake mushrooms balanced the dish, making it an attractive bowl that finished lightly.

The appetizers I ordered were just as satisfying as the ramen. The Tsukune had a sweet soy glaze over pork meatballs that left a soft umami impression. The slightly grilled surface had a subtle smoky flavor, while the inside was moist and retained its juices. The accompanying shishito peppers’ mild bitterness and the soft-boiled egg blended well, creating a natural continuity of saltiness and nuttiness with each bite. Overall, it was a simple yet high-quality side that paired well with the ramen. The Spicy Tori Karaage was crispy on the outside and tender and moist on the inside, providing a great texture from the first bite. The mild spiciness added a stimulating touch without being overwhelming, and the savory aroma lingered throughout the meal. The warm temperature of the freshly fried dish was particularly satisfying, and it seemed like a great match with beer or highballs. The Crispy Bok Choy was, as the name suggests, crispy bok choy, with a slightly crispy finish that spread a nutty flavor, while the inside retained moisture and a subtle sweetness. Simple yet effective, it refreshed the palate in between the rich flavors of the ramen, maintaining a clean balance.

The refreshing Yuzu Limeade combined the unique aroma of yuzu with the zest of lime, providing a burst of freshness with every sip. It was perfect to drink between bites of the savory ramen, smoothly enhancing the overall dining experience. The Housemade Ginger Ale balanced a strong ginger aroma with a subtle sweetness, pairing well with warm dishes. The natural flavors, rather than artificial sweetness, allowed for a refreshing enjoyment until the very last sip.

During this visit, Afuri provided a satisfying experience beyond just a meal, with its focus on classic ramen and a well-balanced selection of appetizers and drinks. How about enjoying a delicious meal at Afuri, where the deep broth and refreshing yuzu aroma come together?

Chic Ramen Spot with Yuzu-Infused Broths

Located in the Art District, Afuri is a place where you can enjoy a variety of appetizers and drinks, including special ramen made with yuzu, which offers a light and refreshing style.

The central area of the restaurant is arranged with several long tables, while one side is designed like a bar, creating a spacious and open feel. The menu was filled with delicious-looking dishes, and we ordered Hotate Carpaccio and Spicy Scallop Hand Roll as appetizers, along with Yuzu Shoyu and Tonkotsu Shio ramen. The Hotate Carpaccio that arrived first captivated our eyes with its fragrant aroma and vibrant orange color. Tasting the fresh scallops with orange brought a refreshing and subtle yuzu flavor that enhanced the scallops’ taste, which were fresh and tender, melting in the mouth.

The Spicy Scallop Hand Roll that followed was served in a style where you roll it yourself, as shown in the photo above. The bouncy texture of the scallops combined with the crunch and freshness of the cucumber and the savory seaweed created a delightful harmony. Although it was labeled as Spicy, the heat was milder than expected, so keep that in mind.

Then came the highly anticipated Yuzu Shoyu and Tonkotsu Shio ramen. First, the Yuzu Shoyu featured a harmonious blend of fresh chicken broth and deep soy sauce flavor, enhanced by the refreshing aroma and taste of yuzu, offering a different experience from regular shoyu ramen. The grilled pork, thin noodles, and soft-boiled egg paired excellently with the ramen, making it a lighter and more refreshing style than typical ramen. The Tonkotsu Shio impressed with its deep and rich broth, which complemented the tender chashu perfectly, making it a ramen I would recommend to those who enjoy a thick and flavorful broth. While Afuri’s signature ramen is made with yuzu, the basic ramen is also incredibly delicious, allowing those who may not prefer yuzu to enjoy a tasty bowl of ramen.
