Gong Gan

A Whimsical Korean Cafe

Recently opened in Silver Lake, Cafe Gong Gan is a space that delivers a warm sense of relaxation, as suggested by its tagline, ‘a place to fill the empty spaces of life.’ The creative latte menu and vibrant atmosphere blend together, and the overall abstract and sensory interior, centered around sky blue, makes it a great spot for taking photos.

We visited during the weekday afternoon, and while the line wasn’t long, the seats inside were already filled, so we ended up sitting at an outdoor table. This allowed us to enjoy our drinks leisurely under the warm sunlight, creating an even more relaxed atmosphere. With a variety of unique and creative menu options, it was fun to choose, and we decided on the Meringue Affogato, Injermi Latte, Gam, and Strawberry French Toast.

The Meringue Affogato was served in a unique pink mug topped with a blue meringue cookie, making it visually intriguing from the start. Following the staff’s guidance, we crushed the meringue cookie and mixed it with vanilla ice cream and espresso, creating a delightful blend of sweetness and bitterness that felt like enjoying a dessert. The visual appeal and the harmony of flavors were impressive. The Injermi Latte featured a topping of injeolmi cream and savory soybean powder, accompanied by two round injeolmi pieces on a skewer. The base was made with soy milk, giving it a smooth and light taste, with an overall nutty flavor that stood out. It was subtly sweet yet pleasantly mild, and the chewy texture of the injeolmi added a fun chewiness that complemented the drink’s nuttiness.

Gam was a drink that combined persimmon and milk, offering a smooth and unique blend. As someone who enjoys persimmons, I had high hopes for this menu item, but personally, I wished it had been a bit sweeter. Those expecting the rich sweetness typical of persimmons might find it somewhat bland. The Strawberry French Toast was visually striking at first glance. With strawberries piled high on moist brioche and decorated with flowers, it clearly showed attention to visual detail, making it a delight to look at. One bite revealed a harmonious blend of refreshing strawberries, creamy softness, and nutty toppings, with the bread being just the right amount of moist, creating a good overall balance. It’s a satisfying choice for both dessert and brunch, making it a menu item I would recommend.
