Cozy Chestnut Shop
Located in Torrance, Hisaya Kyoto Chestnuts is a place where you can enjoy a variety of desserts, from roasted chestnuts to chestnut ice cream, lattes, cakes, and donuts.
The cafe is charmingly decorated, with one wall covered in sticky notes left by customers, reminiscent of restaurant walls near schools during our student days. Inside the cafe, there are no separate tables, and only about two tables outside, so it might not be very spacious, which is something to keep in mind.
As I love chestnuts, I wanted to try various desserts, so I ordered the Kyoto Roasted Chestnuts, Chestnuts Fuji Mountain Ice Cream, Chestnuts Latte, and Chestnut Cake. First, the Kyoto Roasted Chestnuts were well-roasted, making them easy to peel, and they were full of nutty flavor with a soft and sweet taste that was irresistible. Once you taste them, you can’t stop reaching for more. The Chestnuts Fuji Mountain Ice Cream features candied chestnuts on top of sweet vanilla ice cream, creating a delightful harmony between the creaminess of the ice cream and the chewy texture of the sweet chestnuts, allowing you to enjoy both sweetness and nuttiness at the same time.
The Chestnuts Latte was a drink that highlighted the harmony between the nutty flavor of chestnuts and coffee, offering a smooth and subtle sweetness. Just a note, the Chestnuts Latte is not as strong in chestnut flavor as one might expect, so if you’re thinking of a rich chestnut latte, you might be disappointed. Lastly, the Chestnut Cake features a soft and moist castella-like bread filled with candied chestnuts, and with every bite, the rich and nutty flavor of the chestnuts filled my mouth. Overall, the desserts were not overly sweet, emphasizing the unique nuttiness of chestnuts, making them enjoyable for people of all ages.
