Marugame Udon provides hand crafted udon
I visited Marugame Udon, famous for its Sanuki-style udon filled with the unique flavors of the Marugame region in Japan. A distinctive feature of Marugame Udon is its theatrical kitchen where customers can watch the food preparation process. In Japan, it is known as Marugame Seimen, and it was renamed Marugame Udon upon its arrival in the United States.

Among several locations, we visited the Los Angeles – Sawtelle branch, which was very clean from the entrance. A characteristic of Japanese restaurants is that when customers enter, a staff member greets them in Japanese, followed by greetings from the entire staff, which always leaves a good impression. The menu features various types of udon, allowing you to choose your preferred style and additional toppings.

We ordered our favorite Nikutama udon, where ‘niku’ means meat and ‘tama’ means egg. This udon comes with udon noodles, thinly sliced beef, and a poached egg in a soy sauce-based broth, and you can add tempura flakes and green onions as free toppings. After selecting the udon, there is a buffet-style display of various tempura, allowing you to choose the ones you want, with shrimp and squid tempura being particularly popular. Once you’ve made your selections, you can choose a drink at the checkout and sit down to enjoy your meal. Breaking the poached egg releases the yolk, which mixes with the soy sauce broth, enhancing the rich flavor of the udon. The tempura we tried was freshly made and incredibly delicious. If you don’t find the tempura you want, you can order it separately, and they will bring it to your table.
