Damsot

Authentic Korean Pot Rice

Damsot, which recently opened in Koreatown, is a well-known pot rice specialty restaurant from Korea, featuring a menu that stands out from traditional pot rice. Here, the pot rice is served with various toppings on top of the rice, similar to a rice bowl, allowing you to enjoy the moist and chewy rice along with the crispy scorched rice at the end. Each pot rice menu item is uniquely composed, making the selection process quite enjoyable.

We visited Damsot around noon on Saturday. The restaurant was already bustling with customers, but we were able to sit down shortly after waiting for a team to leave. The interior was cozy and clean, creating a lively yet comfortable atmosphere. The menu was filled with appetizing pot rice options, and we decided to order the shrimp tempura as a side, along with three types of pot rice: eggplant pot rice, eel pot rice, and steak pot rice.

The shrimp tempura that arrived first consisted of 5 pieces, with large shrimp coated in a crispy batter that provided a great texture. It was not greasy and had a light flavor, making it even tastier when dipped in sauce, and it was a perfect side dish. The pot rice that followed was neatly presented on a tray with side dishes, salad, miso soup, and barley tea, giving the impression of a well-rounded and balanced meal even with just the basic components. The staff kindly explained how to enjoy the pot rice: you should scoop the rice and toppings into an empty bowl, pour barley tea into the remaining pot, cover it with the lid, and enjoy the crispy scorched rice at the end.

First, the eggplant pot rice was topped with stir-fried pork and eggplant, with a savory seasoning that permeated the rice well, complementing the rich flavor of the pot rice. The eggplant maintained a good texture without becoming mushy, and the combination with the pork was surprisingly hearty and satisfying. Overall, the seasoning was not too strong, allowing for comfortable eating until the end. The eel pot rice had the unique savory flavor of eel from the first bite. The eel was moist and tender, grilled perfectly without any fishy taste. The sweet seasoning soaked into the rice, providing a delightful umami flavor overall. The steak pot rice was served with pieces of steak, butter, wasabi, and an egg yolk on top of the rice. You could dip the meat in the sesame sauce provided separately, but personally, I found the combination of wasabi and butter on the meat to be a better match. Overall, it was a light and harmonious dish that was easy to enjoy. At the end, pouring barley tea into the remaining pot to finish with crispy scorched rice was also a nice touch, allowing for a warm and comforting conclusion to the meal.

Damsot

The rice pot topped with various ingredients, accompanied by neat side dishes and warm soup, made for a well-balanced meal overall. Each menu item had a distinct personality, whether it was the stir-fried eggplant, eel, or steak, and I appreciated the way it concluded with crispy rice. When you need a meal that feels thoughtful without being excessive, Damsot is likely to come to mind.
