Minimalist cafe offering signature cream top drink
Maru Coffee is derived from the Korean word ‘Sanmaru’, which means the peak of a mountain, symbolizing high-quality coffee beans that grow and are harvested in high altitudes.

Maru Coffee felt like a small refuge within the local area rather than being flashy; it was a place where warmth and happiness could be felt. Even at an early hour, many people were lined up waiting, but the line moved faster than expected, so there’s no need to be intimidated by it. While waiting in line, we could also see a cute frog statue drinking coffee. (The frog statue can be seen at the Los Feliz location.)

The cafe was filled with the aroma of various types of bread and coffee. We ordered the Cream Top and Espresso Tonic, and it is said that the name Cream Top was created in 2016. Additionally, it is advised not to drink it with a straw or stir it, but to enjoy it as is to experience the intended flavor, which is due to the cream on top. This is not the cream you find in stores, but Maru Coffee’s signature cream, which has a slightly heavier texture than store-bought cream, yet tastes light and sweet. The harmony of cream and coffee with each sip was incredibly smooth.
The Espresso Tonic offers a unique blend of espresso mixed with sparkling water, delivering a refreshing aroma that follows a slight bitterness, providing a sweet experience alongside the coffee. If you usually enjoy iced Americanos, you will likely love this flavor.

The photo above is from the Arts District location. After my first visit, I was curious about the Bon Bon menu that many people had in their hands, so I visited again. This time, I ordered the Ice Matcha Latte and Bon Bon. When ordering the ice matcha latte, I also added cream, which allowed me to enjoy double the smoothness and flavor with the soft matcha latte and Maru Coffee’s signature cream. The other coffee, Bon Bon, comes in a small cup with espresso topped with signature cream, and the rim of the cup is coated with brown sugar. The menu describes it as Espresso Topped with Sweetened Cream and Brown Sugar – Cinnamon Rim, and just from the description, you can get a sense of what it’s like. When I take a sip of the bitter espresso, the cream gently balances it out, while the brown sugar that lingers on my lips sweetens the remaining bitterness. It was a very appealing coffee even for someone like me who doesn’t usually enjoy espresso.
