The Original Nagoya Mazesoba
Located in Arcadia, Menya Hanabi specializes in Japanese-style Mazesoba. Mazesoba is a ramen style that is mixed with various toppings and noodles without broth, and the combination of rich seasonings and toppings is quite addictive. We arrived just in time for opening, but we saw people already lining up, indicating that it is a popular spot even on regular days.
The menu could be checked by scanning the QR code available on the table. There were various types of Mazesoba and appetizers, and we decided to order The Original, Chashu Nagoya Mazesoba, Mentai Mayo Takoyaki, and Japanese Arabiki Sausage.
First, the appetizers Mentai Mayo Takoyaki and Japanese Arabiki Sausage were served. The takoyaki was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, staying true to the basics, and the addition of mentaiko mayo complemented it nicely. The sausage had a chewy texture and a salty flavor that was not bad, but it wasn’t particularly impressive enough to recommend.
Next, the main dishes, The Original and Chashu Nagoya Mazesoba, were served. The difference between the two dishes was whether or not there was chashu topping, and the meat had a nice chewiness that harmonized well overall. The Mazesoba could be chosen between Spicy and Non-Spicy, and personally, I found the Non-Spicy version to be tastier as it allowed the natural flavors of the ingredients to shine through. Following the eating instructions, I added vinegar, which definitely enhanced the umami and made it much more delicious. It wasn’t a typical sour vinegar but rather a slightly sweet vinegar, making the combination work well. When I was almost done with the noodles, I ordered an additional scoop of rice, which you can mix with the remaining sauce for another delightful experience. The fluffy texture of the rice made it a perfect finishing touch.
